Expression of Adoration

Let them praise the name of the Lord, For He commanded and they were created. Let them praise the name of the Lord, For His name alone is exalted and supreme;

His glory and majesty are above earth and heaven. He has lifted up a horn for His people [giving them strength, prosperity, dignity, and preeminence]…

Psalm 148: 5,13-14 (AMP)

Worship is defined as the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity. When we sing worship songs to God, we are expressing that adoration and reverence for who God is. There is something about demonstrating our worship through song that seems to bring us right into the very throne room of God. Words powerfully express what is in our hearts. Music evokes our emotions and inspires movement (whether raising our hands, moving our feet, or simply swaying). When we worship God through song, we use our whole being, and the Psalm says that is exactly what God’s heart is warmed to receive.

Created for Worship

Consider how creation itself utters forth praise and worship of the very God who created it. Leaves rustle in the trees as the wind blows. Birds sing in the soprano section of the nature-choir. Animals that move along the ground provide musical fullness, filling out the lower-end of the scale. Even sea creatures and stars sing along! All of creation acknowledges the greatness and splendor of Almighty God! However, in all of magnificent creation, we are the only ones that have a relationship with God. Consider this: if the whole earth, and even the heavens are praising the name of the Lord without the intimate knowledge of His character and sacrificial love, how much more should we, who see His heart for us, be praising His name!

The splendor of a King, clothed in majesty
Let all the Earth rejoice
He wraps himself in light
And darkness tries to hide, and trembles at His voice
Age to age He stands, and time is in His hands
Beginning and the end

Worship is vital to our faith and our relationship with God. It is what we were created to do! We need to worship and remember the greatness of God. There are times we may feel overwhelmed or distant from God – we need to worship Him! When we feel happy and full of joy – we need to worship our great God! In the times we find ourselves at peace, we must worship our loving, Father God. When we worship, we express to God our acknowledgement of His greatness and glory. Every moment in life contains an opportunity to worship the Creator of the whole earth and everything in it (including us).

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God!

Before the King

This worship song by Chris Tomlin is a great one to kick-start our worship regardless of where we find ourselves in our walk of faith. The simplicity of acknowledging that God is great, timeless, above everything we are acquainted with, and the only One worthy of every bit of praise from us will bring us to our knees in utter awe and adoration. Imagine standing in a room filled with His glory, along with all the host of Heaven declaring, “How great is our God!”

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God!
Name above all names
Worthy of our praise
My heart will sing
How great is our God!

Take time to consider how He has demonstrated His greatness to you, even in the smallest of ways. Then ask to see His present glory and worship Him: the One who is truly worthy of all our praise.

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God!
