You are loved
I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. Jeremiah 31:3
Do you know that you are loved?
I’m not talking about romantic “roses and kisses” love. I’m talking about real love. On February 15th, when the flowers have wilted and half the box of chocolate is eaten (ok maybe the whole box) and you return to work yet another day, you are loved. Every day of the year, you are loved. That is what “everlasting” love is – it doesn’t run out and it’s not confined to a couple of days on the calendar. Everlasting love is every single day for all of your life and then into eternity. Everlasting love isn’t based on what you did that was wonderful and it doesn’t spoil like expired milk because of anything you did that was bad. It lasts forever.
“Too good to be true”, you say? Or perhaps, “No one loves me like that.”But it is true. There is Someone who loves you. Someone who wants to draw you to Himself by showing you His unfailing kindness. Someone who gave up literally everything just to be with you. This “Someone” is Jesus.
Before you start glazing over because you’ve heard a million times “Jesus loves me this I know…” let’s take a look at what it really means to love and be loved. I said a moment ago that real love isn’t based around a specific day of the year or occasional “romantic” gestures. So, if real love isn’t long walks on the beach at sunset or passionate, candlelight evenings, then what is it?
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 tells us what real love is: Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
This may sound like an overwhelming and unattainable list. The good news is that this beautiful, perfect love is the love that God has for you. His love for you is patient and kind.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ…so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:4-7
God’s love for you is not proud, envious, arrogant or rude. God’s love doesn’t ever insist on His own way, even when He knows that His way is best for you! Regardless of whether you choose His way or yours, God loves you with an everlasting love that doesn’t get irritated or resentful towards you. Instead, because of His great love for you, God rejoices knowing the truth that His Son has once and for all washed you completely clean from everything you’ve ever done wrong and made a way for you to be with Him once again.
This is real love – not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. – 1 John 4:10
Don’t think this is a one-time or once-a-year kind of event. God will never fall out of love with you. Understand that real love, the everlasting love that God has for you, never ends.
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:38-39
Yes, you are loved. You are loved with real, everlasting love that you couldn’t possibly earn and you’ll never lose. It’s not based on a date on the calendar and it’s not demonstrated with temporary flowers or chocolates. The love God has for you is real, free, and eternal.
